Clifford came to the intellectual property profession with 25 years experience in a telecommunications research and development environment. He qualified as a patent attorney in a London private practice firm, and was involved in 2001 in the setting up of the London intellectual property office of a Chicago law firm. He joined Harrison Goddard Footes newly opened London office in 2004, enhancing the firms strong electronics and mechanical team, becoming a partner in May 2004. 

His particular interests include optical communications, semiconductor lasers, microelectronics, silicon and III-V devices, epitaxy, thin films, ohmic contacts and liquid crystals. 

His current practice is principally in the prosecution of computer architecture, telecommunications and electronics patents. However, Clifford’s practice also includes the original drafting of electronics, telecommunications, materials, laser machining and mechanical patent applications, usually working closely with UK or Irish inventors, and subsequent prosecution of the patent applications at the UK Patent Office, under the Patent Cooperation Treaty and at the European Patent Office. Clifford has extensive experience in the preparation and prosecution of design registrations, including European Community Designs, and in the provision of infringement opinions concerning designs registration. He liaises with US and other foreign associates in the prosecution of patents and design applications. 

Clifford is a Chartered Physicist and a member of the Physics and Law Group of the Institute of Physics.
