David’s main areas of expertise are in the fields of automotive and aerospace components, propulsion systems, metallurgy and engineering metallurgical processing, nuclear engineering and composite materials including metal matrix composites. David also has considerable experience representing clients in oral proceedings before the European Patent Office.
David entered the patent profession after working as a metallurgist in the plain bearings industry for some eight years after graduating, the work being mainly concerned with research into advanced bearing materials and their manufacturing processes.
In 1978 he joined the Ministry of Defence Patents Directorate to train as a patent attorney and from 1980 to 1984 was based at the Royal Aerospace Establishment, Farnborough advising on and protecting inventions arising at a number of government research establishments. David qualified whilst at RAE and then moved back into industry in 1984. Since then he has established patent and trademark departments in an industrial company and for a national firm of lawyers. In 1995 Harrison Goddard Foote (HGF) was established with former colleagues and, from modest beginnings in 1995 HGF has grown to one of the largest firms of patent and trademark attorneys in the UK. In that time, David’s practice has developed and grown to include many internationally recognised and respected clients.
